There are spiritual laws that guide existence in the spiritual domain. Every spiritual being in one way or the other are opened to the realities of this realm and so, in one way or the other are yearning for a day to enter into that realm where we all belong, that is the realm of endless existence. This realm is called eternity – the realm where the soul of a man is never going to submit to death, for there will be nothing again to be separated from. I say separate, because the physical death is simply a separation of the soul and spirit from the body.

In the spiritual realm, the mortal body does not exist. And so, the first and foremost thing to do is to understand eternity and how to lay hold of it.

If eternity is a realm of endless existence, then it becomes important that a man be placed rightly in that realm, because if a man enters into the suffering part of eternity, then the soul of such a man suffers forever. For this cause, man desires to enter into the realm where he also can have dominion over death and suffering. This realm is the realm of Life. Notice that ‘Life’ here begins with a capital letter. It is either the life with the capital letter or ‘eternal life’. This is the realm of life where God’s life is shared abroad in the life of a man (Ref: Matt 19:17). However, eternal life is simply the life of God – without beginning and ending. This means that every spiritual being has inherent tendency to crave for an endless life.

How to enter is the basic reason men do all sorts of things. They seek this life by all means. They are ready to make sacrifices in order to apprehend it. Some kill, some do all sorts of things. Those who are religious have subjected themselves to some strict rules they must keep in order to earn and to possess this life. Notice I used the words ‘earn’ and to ‘possess’. That means, What I must do so as to enter the realm of life. For every area and perspective of life, that is the basic question the natural man asks. Are you not also asking such questions quietly? What do I do to pass my exams? What do I do to make my marriage work? What do I do to succeed in life? When we ask these questions, it is an expression of our desire to enter into the realm of no disappointment, power, success, health and so on. This realm is the realm where God is in charge. Sadly, many have ignored the access into the kingdom and are more preoccupied with having the assets of the kingdom.

From the scripture, we understand that eternal life is not an object of merchandise which you can collect in exchange for your deeds, rather, it is a realm that one can enter into. (Ref Matt 19:17). The struggle to enter comes in two dimensions.

  1. a) ‘I’ desires to enter
  2. b) ‘He’ wants to give you.

Notice that from the scriptures, the natural man desires to enter through his achievements, and so, he constantly desires what to do in order to enter. He wouldn’t mind any type of work, sacrifice, bribe. ‘I’ wants to earn it. So, if you have a list of commandment, Mr ‘I’ is ready to keep them. Just show him a list of commandments to obey. On the contrary, Jesus wants men to receive eternal life, not by efforts but as a gift. This is God’s intense desire.

(John 3:16 KJV)

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever    believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

It only takes believing in the finished work of the cross that one is assured access into the realm of eternal life.

In order to lay hold of eternal life, one must of necessity change his mentality from wanting to do in order to receive eternal life to wanting to receive eternal life in order to live eternally. One of the ways we find eternal life in operation in our live is in the area of living above the natural moral laws in  the physical domain. In other words when eternal life is at work in one’s life, he finds himself naturally keeping those commandments that Jesus listed to the rich young man. Notice how that the young man still expressed his quest for the endless though he claims to have kept the entire written code as Jesus enumerated for him.

I have obeyed all these commandments, the young man replied, ‘What else do I             need to do’? (Matt 19: 20 GNT)

That means, eternal life is not found in keeping the laws, rather, the law finds expression correctly only when eternal life has been received as a gift from God.

HOW DO I RECEIVE THIS LIFE?

I know that this question is already your heart cry. That also was the rich man’s heart cry. Jesus gave a simple answer which is very difficult for the natural man to agree with. Let’s take a peep into verse 21 of Matthew 19.

Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go and sell all you have and give the            money to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven; then come and follow me.

From the ending part of this scripture, I discovered that as one follows Jesus, he would lead him into that realm of life, but one cannot follow if he is still tied to many other desires and pursuits. And so, Jesus literally says, settle all other things so you can follow me. Be done with them. Sell them and part with the proceeds. This is however the most difficult response for the natural man. The inability to give up the old wine in agreement to the fact that the new is better.

A bird at hand is better than many in the forest is an adage that has kept many from taking the challenge of liberty. Man is naturally afraid of whether God will do what he says he would do. Let’s look at Peter’s expression of his own fears in verse 27.

Then Peter spoke up. “Look,” he said, “we have left everything and followed you. What will we have?”

Don’t worry, also look at Jesus’ reply concerning this fear. I am also closing with it.

Jesus said to them, “You can be sure that when the son of man sits on his glorious throne in the new Age, then you twelve followers of mine will sit on thrones, to rule the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or fathers or mother or children or fields for my sake, will receive a hundred times more and will be given eternal life.
